PERSONAL LEADERSHIP PHILOSOPHIES 2
Personal Leadership Philosophies
Leadership in nursing plays a vital role in healthcare, and the way it is practiced can have
a tremendous impact on the organization as a whole (Marshall & Broome, 2017). Nurse leaders
are responsible in creating environments that not only promote quality care for patients, but also
create a culture in which excellence in healthcare is celebrated, and where the best working
conditions are promoted for providers and staff (Marshall & Broome, 2017). Leadership skills do
not come naturally to everyone in leadership roles; but with practice, awareness, and cultivation,
these skills can be developed and honed (Marshall & Broome, 2017). The purpose of this paper
is to explore my personal philosophies, strengths, and weaknesses relating to leadership, and to
develop a plan to achieve my goal of becoming a transformational leader.
Personal Leadership Philosophies
Developing a personal leadership philosophy is a way to help keep a leader on course;
it’s how we respond to situations and is based on our values and beliefs (Academy Leadership,
n.d.). Developing a personal leadership philosophy also lets people know what your values are,
how you will behave, and what you expect from others (Academy Leadership, n.d.).
Core values drive who we are and are unchanging despite shifting conditions and goals;
they should shape our actions and decisions (Starr, 2016). Core values can be defined as guiding
principles based on a person’s central beliefs and are responsible for an understanding of right
and wrong (Your Dictionary, n.d.). My core values include integrity and excellence; I strive to
do the best of my ability, and honesty and truthfulness are inherent in my actions
